24.3.2008 - Hong Kong and China : If you want a nice quiet holiday then I don't recommend China! The smashing sounds of constant construction, the honking of lunatic drivers and the screaming school kids are reminder that this place is developing rapidly (and somewhat chaotically). We spent three days in Honk Kong (yum yum) then took a 12 hour bus (keep eyes shut if you don't like to see near misses with oncoming trucks) to the mainland Chinese town of Yangshuo. It's a tourist debacle (no - i don't want my shoes shined!) but it's kinda fun, especially when you grab a bike ($2 a day) and ride out into the very real Chinese rural country-side.

08-09-2007 - Fortress & Red Rocks : Jono and I hiked into the big red wall that’s below The Fortress and visible clearly from The Gallery. To me, its one of the last great walls of the Grampians that hasn’t been climbed. It is a long and steep 1 hour+ approach up a long ridge, but about 30 minutes less than gettign up to the Fortress proper. I had sussed it out from the ground about 5 years ago and thought it looked pretty cool. Well, this time we brought the drill, bolts and assorted ropes. Firstly we climbed two pitches of rubbish up the left side to get on top, then spent most of the day rapping and bolting the line. It’s not a sport route, quite a bit of trad especially in in the middle and right at the top (magnificent trad corner!). Its an awesome wall, a bit like Flame Wall but more straight up and down climbing. Lots of killer jugs. It overhangs massively – about 10m in 40m so its gonna be pretty pumpy! Most of the climbing is about grade 23ish – but annoyingly there is one blank section that looks crimpy and hard – probably 25+ . Because of the length and all the trad the route will probably be done in two pitches – there is a good belay ledge about a 1/3rd of the way up the wall on the right that would be a suitable stopover point – we ran out of bolts to install anchors here, in fact our bolting was cutting it fine as I wasn’t expecting the wall to be as high as it was. Its 9 bolts plus a rap anchor – which we managed to install using one battery. The bolts are a mixed mess of styles - expansions, glue in carrots (with hangers) and lastly ringbolts. Its all I had in my bolt stash! We didn’t get a chance to climb it as we used glue-ins. Its going be killer and I’m really excited to get back up there ASAP (it will have to be in 3 weeks time when I get back from OS). For the afternoon Jono and I ran up to the Fortress and blasted off the 150m long Quincas Borba (18). Gets three stars in the guide but I didn’t think much of it, quite loose, sandy, dirty and scary! We topped out as the sun slipped below the horizon which wasn’t ideal as its a long way from anywhere up there!. Jono had forgotten to bring his head torch so it was a long and epic walk out – about 2 hours. I had my torch!

Sunday – Our legs were buggered from all the walking and running on the Saturday so we headed to Red Rocks to try and work some unfinished business. Warmed up on the new route we did last weekend (Bikini Bootcamp – 20) and toproped a good grade 22 variant to the right of it. Then on to my new nemesis project – Chrysalis, which is a massive left hand extension to Fat Fingered Freak that I bolted last year. Back then it felt bloody impossible, but now after 2 days work its getting very close. I have linked the whole bottom traverse bit (26?) and only have to pull off on linkage the super hard crimp section near the top to finish it. Its very footwork dependant as its reachy and thin. My girly fingers get worn out quickly so it will have to wait until the next time im up there. I was super happy with the linkage I did get though. Last week Adam managed to do the start moves on his crack project as well so we are all going great guns!

05.09.2007 - Gelibrand Williamstown : I had the morning off from work, so I decided to see if there was anything worthwhile to see 5 minutes froim my house. Amazingly it was awesome! Heaps of life, clear water, no swell and no sign of other divers. The guy in the local dive shop told me no one ever dives here - i have no idea why. It only got to 4m deep but there was enough to entertain me for close to an hour. Heaps of old bottles, slate and other human debris as well. I picked up half a pottery bottle that looks like its from the early 19th century. I think this would be a great night dive as well.

14.10.2005 - Mother Buttress & Band Of Gypsies : Three days of perfect sun, sandstone and screaming (at redpoint failures). Friday Adam and I battled hard on World Party at Taipan. Niether of us ticked out respective project pitches unfortunately. Saturday we did a few new routes at Buandik area and then swung a few laps at The Gallery. Malcolm did the coveted second ascent of Seven Diamond Experience (25). On sunday a big posse (more than 10 climbers!) spent the day at Band Of Gypsies, a new crag just north of Red Rocks. Several new routes were done including the 'last great crack' of the Grampians, the amazing Grand Oral Disseminator (27).

Mother Buttress, Buandik Area, Victoria Ranges, Grampians

* Blunted Enthusiasm 25m 20 (mixed)
Turtle shell wall climbing. A runout sport route or a very safe mixed climb. Starts 5m left of Split Decision. Up easy slab to horizontal. Balance up seam (UB) and then blast up jugs to stance. Take the right bolted line past a further three UB?s to top. A limited selection of large wires and medium cams supplement the five bolts. Rap off double UBs above Split Decision. FFA Neil Monteith, Adam Demmert, Mark Gould & Boudewijn Docter 15.10.2005

Early Riser 25m 19 (mixed)
Neil had this cleaned and bolted before anyone else got out of bed. An slightly easier trad finish to Blunted Enthusiasm. After the second UB take the left line (RB) to thin crack. Finish up well protected wall about 2m left of Blunted Enthusiasm. FFA Neil Monteith, Adam Demmert 15.10.2005

Band Of Gypsies (Red Rocks), Victoria Range, Grampians

** Grand Oral Disseminator 25m 27 (mixed)
One of the best crack lines in the Grampians. Stared at for years by various suitors ? but no one had dared to actually rope up. Malcolm eventually put the climb out of its misery. The desperate right-leading diagonal on smooth orange rock. Footholds are minimal. All trad apart from lone FH at double knee bar stance at flakes widest point. Watch for skating cams and feet as the rock is very slick. Walk off for descent. FFA Malcolm Matheson & Adam Demmert 16.10.2005

Squeezed Out 13m 21 (mixed)
The bolted off-width corner/crack 5m left of Private Parts. Can be laybacked and bridged at about grade 25 (as done by first ascentist!). It is grade 21 if you enjoy thrutching inside deep cracks with fist stacks. Two BR?s and several #5 cams are required. Neil Monteith, Adam Demmert, James Pfrunder & Malcolm Matheson 16.10.2005

Dutch Courage 18m 20 (trad)
Steep right facing corner 5m right of Crazy Like a Fox. Layback, jam and chimney - this route has everything. Up the initial corner crack, to get established in the chimney, wriggle up this with difficulty. Then right round the arête, finishing up the right hand chimney. Trad belay, then easy scramble to the slings at the top of Crazy Like A Fox. FFA Mark Gould & Boudewijn Docter 16.10.2005

02.10.2005 - Grahams Creek & Band of Gypsies : GOOD FRIDAY WALLS, GRAHAMS CRK, VICTORIA RANGE, GRAMPIANS

** Battling The Bulge 17m 26 (mixed)
Slick and sustained old-school Arapiles style line.?The central route of the middle buttress.? Leap for jug from rock cairn (FH), then up short face to fingercrack. Up this for 6m to slight stance. Swing right across awkward bulging face (FH) to below final seam. Up this which eases to jugs and lower-off anchor. Bring a full rack and some slings to extend runners in the traverse. ?Descent: Lower-off?. FFA ?Neil Monteith 01-10-2005

BAND OF GYPSIES (RED ROCKS), VICTORIA RANGE, GRAMPIANS

* Arrested 12m 24 (trad)
A tougher and more compact version of Orestes at Arapiles. Steep right facing corner 6m left of Private Parts. Very sustained laybacking on immaculate finger locks and edges. Medium wires and cams. Double UB lower-off. FFA Neil Monteith 02-10-2005

* Over Committed 20m 20 (mixed)
Superb arête. Originally led ground up in a state of pure fear. Retro-bolted to eliminate 10m runout to first bit of trad gear. Starts 3m right Band of Thieves at right edge of wall. Step off block on the right to gain arête (BR) then pivot around to left side and awkwardly up (BR) to easier ground. Continue up arête with awesome gear to top. Rap off chains above Band of Thieves. 19.6.2005 - Melton Creek Supercrag : The word is out. Melton Creek Supercrag is the place to be this winter if you are a boulderer in Melbourne. With quality rock, easily accessible alcohol and stunning natural scenery this place is sure to become the 'heuco of the south'. Rumor has it that Stefan Glowacz paid a visit on his recent world tour. The locals are desperately trying to polish off the last standing problems before Klem and Nicole fly over to 'Clean Up Australia' once again. They will be pleasantly surprised.
